The working of Aura stone starts from the open-pit quarries of F.lli Pitardi Snc in the locality of “San Lasi” of Melpignano (Lecce). Here the quarry level is established after leveling the outcropping rocky bank and eliminating the superficial crust.
The “ditch” excavation system makes use of mechanical equipment that reduces the rock to prismatic blocks. These blocks, called “cuzzetti” and “pezzotti”, are cut on the basis of standardized dimensions that, in addition to being tested and conventionally accepted after centuries of use, meet perfectly the need to di optimize the production process which is, in any case, connected with the variety present in the level being worked on.
